British Esports Association works to create a safer esports space for young people

Esports (or electronic sports) is a term used to describe competitive video gaming.

Although 'grown-ups' may view video gaming as a waste of leisure time, esports is a hugely popular recreational activity that now offers many job and career opportunities around the world. Last year, British Esports teamed up with education publisher Pearson to develop the world's first esports BTEC qualification.

British Esports is a not-for-profit national body established in 2016 to promote esports in the UK, increase its level of awareness, improve standards and inspire future talent.

The Association is set to launch a new membership platform for 12 - 19, which aims to make competitive video gaming safer for children and young people. Users are verified at the point of entry and communication within the platform is reviewed to reduce toxicity and cyber threats.

Challenging victim-blaming attitudes (ThinkUKnow)

The language that we use when we communicate with others can easily appear to be negative or disparaging. Sometimes when discussing safeguarding issues or crimes against children and young people, the language we use could suggest 'victim-blaming'.

The professional resource organisation for online safety, ThinkUKnow, has published a blog about victim-blaming when teaching about online harms.

'Victim-blaming happens when the victim of a crime is held entirely or partially at fault for the harm they’ve experienced.

Victim-blaming can be direct and explicit, for example, telling the victim it was their fault. It can also be indirect and unconscious, for example, questioning what a victim could have done differently, or how they may have reacted differently in the victim’s shoes.'

The post looks what victim-blaming might look like in the classroom and how teachers can challenges those attitudes.

Single Central Record Online Tool - Three months of SCR Tracker FREE!

Many schools still use MS Excel for their single central record and whilst this can be effective, there are specific tools on the market to make the process more efficient. Large schools and Multi-Academy Trusts in particular benefit from a more streamlined approach, not least because data input and monitoring can be done remotely.

One online solution is SCR Tracker helping schools and trusts ensure that they are fully compliant. Former school business manager, Luke O'Dwyer, co-founder of SCR Tracker felt that whilst Excel did the job, it could be done much more effectively.

SCR Tracker offers extra features for Multi-Academy Trusts, including an extra central team SCR, user-level permissions, additional trust-wide custom checks, custom branding and staff profile transfers.

The SCR Tracker team have offered readers of the Safeguarding Briefing three months free. Just add the code 'ANDREWFEB' into the referral box on Watch Demo button here: www.scrtracker.com

Childhood Trauma and the Brain with Prof. Eamon McCrory - FREE ONLINE SEMINAR (Anna Freud Centre)

Childhood trauma, in the form of maltreatment and neglect, is one of the strongest predictors of later mental health problems across childhood, adolescence and adulthood. However, the neurobiological mechanisms by which childhood adversity 'gets under the skin' remain poorly understood.

The mental health charity, Anna Freud Centre, has launched a 'ground-breaking' series of seminars bringing together some of the most eminent thinkers in child and family mental health in the world.

In this seminar, clinical psychologist, Professor Eamon McCrory from University College London, discusses the concept of Latent Vulnerability. This is one way to think about how maltreatment exposure can calibrate brain systems, including the threat, reward and memory systems.

Coronavirus and Trauma: Implications for Children and Young People (UK Trauma Council)

Some children and young people will have potentially traumatic experiences related to the coronavirus pandemic. While many will recover with support from family and friends, others will need clinical intervention.

The UK Trauma Council has created videos and guides sharing practical, evidence-based advice to help parents, carers and other key adults to support children and young people’s during the pandemic. The three videos can be found at the link below:

Why understanding the past is crucial during a crisis (Professor Eamon McCrory, University College London)
