Safeguarding Briefing - 20th September 2021

Dear Colleague,

Outdoor Education and School Visits

Now that Covid restrictions have eased, you may well be considering organising school visits. The Outdoor Education Advisers' Panel (OEAP) holds the national guidance to support schools (and other youth organisations) when planning out-of-school learning experiences.

The National Guidance is available as an online resource, as it is being continually improved and updated to reflect the developing understanding of good practice.

New and updated guidance for September 2021 includes:

  • Coronavirus and Educational Visits
  • Bites and Stings
  • Woodland Activities
  • Coronavirus
  • Sepsis

You can find the guidance on the OEAP website here: https://oeapng.info/

Free bereavement training for teachers (Winston's Wish)

On average, 1 in every 29 children will be bereaved of a parent. That’s one in every class. Whether your student has been bereaved recently or several years ago, they need support from the school community to ensure that they can cope with their grief. That’s why it’s vital that teachers and staff understand how to support the grieving children and young people in their school.

Free online bereavement training courses from Winston's Wish will help you understand how grief affects a child or young person and how you can help them cope with their grief. The courses are designed for schools are and would also be useful for anyone who works with bereaved children. Written by the Winston’s Wish team, drawing on their many years of experience supporting bereaved children.

What schools need to know about adoption (Carol Atherton)

Carol Atherton is an English teacher, writer and the parent of an adopted child. Her son has just finished his school career and is now starting college.

Carol writes, 'It’s fair to say that school can be a difficult place for adopted and care-experienced children, and we’ve had our share of issues to cope with over the years. So here’s my list of things that schools need to know about adoption, based on fourteen and a half years of adoptive parenting.'

It is a really interesting article and contains some really important points. Well worth a read, especially if there are children who have been adopted in your school.

In this free training video about sexual health, Education and Wellbeing Coordinator, Zahrah Al-Bejawi, looks at how to identify potential challenges, and provides teachers with strategies for dealing with the difficult subjects that arise when teaching relationships and sex education.

Anti-bullying Week: 15th - 19th November 2021

Anti-bullying Week is coordinated in England by the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) and this year has the theme 'One Kind Word'. The week will begin with Odd Socks Day supported by CBBC and CBeebies star Andy Day and his band Andy and the Odd Socks.

Kindness is more important today than it has ever been. The isolation of the last year has underlined how little acts of consideration can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us.

In 2020, 80% of schools took part in the week reaching over 7.5 million children and young people. Schools in England can now download free teaching resources and themed assemblies, geared to different key stages.

You can find out more information, and download early resources, like '50 ideas for Anti-bullying week' here: https://anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week/anti-bullying-week-2021-one-kind-word
