Learning Scientists: Six Strategies for Effective Teaching and Learning - Strategies 1 & 2

Aims

To understand and describe how cognitive psychologists develop and evaluate learning and teaching strategies

Understand and describe two of the six key strategies discussed:

1. Spaced practice (sometimes called distributed practice)
2. Interleaving
3. Elaboration
4. Concrete examples
5. Dual coding
6. Retrieval practice

Begin to developing a plan for application of the strategies in your own teaching.

Overview

Research from cognitive psychological science can be used to inform teaching practices. In this professional development series, Learning Scientists Drs. Megan Sumeracki, Cynthia Nebel, and Althea Need Kaminske will provide an overview of six strategies that have robust evidence to support their use. For each strategy, they will explain what the strategy is, evidence supporting its effectiveness, and examples of what teachers and learners can do to utilize the strategy. Participants will have opportunities to plan for implementation in their own teaching

There are three sessions, each covering two of the six strategies. Sessions can be booked individually or as a full program.
