Learn how to play the Piano

Piano or Electronic Keyboard?

Piano and Electronic Keyboard are different instruments and have different teaching methods and exam systems. Both need practice at home so it’s important to have the correct instrument for this as practising on the wrong instrument will affect progress.

For piano lessons pupils will need an acoustic piano or a digital (electric) piano with 88 keys. Ideally a good quality digital piano should have a graded hammer action to replicate the feel of an acoustic piano, but some of the budget range digital pianos have semi-weighted keys or “touch response” which is also acceptable for the early stages of learning.  If you do not have or plan to purchase either type of piano, we reccommend you book Electronic Keyboard lessons instead.

Availability of in-school lessons depends on there being enough pupils wanting to learn to play the same instrument.

Group lessons are only available if there is another pupil of a similar standard to group your child with.  If not, you can either top up to pay for individual lessons, or we would otherwise have to cancel your booking.

If we cannot provide the lessons you have booked we will refund any fees paid.

Please check whether Piano lessons are possible with your child’s school before booking.  If you do not have a Piano at home for you child to practise on, we recommend that they learn Electronic Keyboard instead.

Recommended Year Group
EMS recommends that children should be in at least school year 2 to start learning this instrument, due to both the physical size of the instrument and levels of dexterity required.
