Aims
The purpose of this two day training is to enable School Senior Leadership Teams to implement a whole school trauma informed approach to their setting.
This training is also suitable for interested teachers wanting to develop their trauma informed knowledge.
Overview
Trauma-informed practice is a relational approach to responsing effectively to childen's behaviours. It works because it encourages key people in children's lives to make sense of their behaviours in the context of their life experiences, focussing on how they responded to things rather than what is wrong with them. It is important for schools and school staff because it gives them an approach which helps children feel safe in the moment and in the long term. Feeling safe is essential for children to learn effectively. The training will introduce school staff and partners to the ideas of Attachment, Regulation and Competency (ARC). This framework will provide a strategic approach which will enable a consistent response to behaviour even whilst differentiating for individual children's needs. By the end of this training attendees will be able to use the ARC Framework (Blaustein & Kinniburgh, 2019). This is an essential first step for School Senior Leaders in supporting their staff to have a shared understanding and language, promoting a whole school approach to thinking about children’s needs and how to help them feel safe. This training is aligned with borough aims in reducing exclusion, youth violence, emotionally-based school avoidance and supporting the wellbeing of staff and families. It is also aligned with current DFE/ NICe guidance.
