Aims

To develop a greater understanding of the issues of online safety for children and young people with SEND or additional vulnerabilities

Overview

This 2-session program, particularly for special schools but open to all, focuses on online safety that meets statutory requirements as detailed in Keeping Children Safe in Education (2020/21 when updated). It will focus on learners with SEND and/or vulnerabilities. Consideration will be given to the latest research and what it tells us about the specific risks that are faced by SEND learners and the importance of understanding these risks to keep learners safe. No-cost educational resources that are available to support learners will be explored as will quality sources of support. A questionnaire will be sent out to participants in advance to ensure that the content is tailored to need, and a gap task will be set to be completed between the two sessions.

The 360 Online Safety Mark framework (for which Traci is an assessor) will be a loose base for the follow up session; during this session you will  critically evaluate your current provision and look for areas of development; All content will focus on principles of outstanding practice, safeguarding and relevant, appropriate and up to date education.

We are also offering a version of this course for staff working in special schools with students who have moderate to severe learning needs. The first session is a joint session and will be attended by delegates from both courses; the follow-up  session has  been differentiated by broad student ability, which will mean it is relevant and focussed on the needs of the school.

I certainly felt the workshop extremely beneficial. It would sound extremely short-sighted but as a professional I had not previously linked vulnerabilities and SEND with online activities for the abuse and exploitation. It has not been mentioned in safeguarding training previously and your explanation of this, linked to current research was a real light-bulb moment for me. I will plan my Online Safety programme with this very much in mind.
