Aims

To develop the subject knowledge, skills and understanding for high quality RE teaching and learning in the primary classroom.

Overview

This three-part programme supports primary practitioners to reflect on and improve their teaching of RE. Each session lasts half a day.

Session 1 looks at what we choose to teach (live via Zoom)

  • What should be in an RE ‘curriculum’?
  • Creating a rationale that ensures better engagement and retention in RE
  • Ensuring you have a rich progression in skills and knowledge

Session 2 is an on-demand recording to support reflection and activities. It will explore five ideas for outstanding RE, including:

  • Creating a Prayer Spine to support language acquisition across the curriculum
  • Getting children to talk like theologians, ethicists and sociologists
  • Sensitive navigation of the right to withdraw

Session 3 explores how we teach RE, and how we establish and evidence our impact (live via Zoom)

  • Is there a ‘Greater Depth’ in RE, and how might we teach it?
  • Assessment approaches that don’t divert focus and energy from the real substance of learning
  • The role of RE in ‘Cultural capital’, ‘SMSC’ and the development of ‘British Values’

Teachers kindle in students a thirst for truth and wisdom. You spark off a desire for beauty. You help them to discover the treasures of other cultures and peoples. What an awesome responsibility and privilege!
