Aims

To develop the subject knowledge, skills and understanding for high quality teaching and learning of reading in the primary classroom.

Overview

This three-part programme supports primary practitioners to reflect on and improve their teaching of English reading comprehension. Each session lasts half a day.

Session 1 looks at what we choose to teach (live via Zoom)

  • Creating an effective rationale to drive learning in every reading session
  • Ensuring you have a rich progression in skills and knowledge
  • What should we include in the ‘perfect’ reading lesson?

Session 2 is an on-demand recording to support reflection and activities. It will explore five exciting ideas for teaching comprehension, including:

  • Whole-class, guided, reciprocal, or one-to-one interventions: which approach is best?
  • Getting children to talk about their reading, and not just to do it
  • How to get children to read across the curriculum

Session 3 explores how we teach Reading, and how we establish and evidence our impact (live via Zoom)

  • ‘Greater Depth’ as a behaviour rather than a level - what is it, and how can we teach it?
  • Assessment approaches that don’t divert focus and energy from the real substance of learning
  • Maintaining high standards in reading even when it’s used to support learning in other parts of the curriculum

You should never read just for ‘enjoyment’. Read to make yourself smarter! Pick ‘hard books’. Ones you have to concentrate on while reading
