Aims
To develop the subject knowledge, skills and understanding for high quality geography teaching and learning in the primary classroom.
Overview
This three-part programme supports primary practitioners to reflect on and improve their teaching of geography. Each session lasts half a day.
Session 1 looks at what we choose to teach (live via Zoom)
- More than maps and lists of place names - what exactly is “geography”?
- Ensuring you have a rich progression in skills and knowledge
- What should we include in the ‘perfect’ geography lesson?
Session 2 is an on-demand recording to support reflection and activities. It will explore five ideas for exciting geography, including:
- Broadening our understanding of ‘fieldwork’
- Engaging ways to expand, enrich and apply geographical vocabulary
- Avoiding stereotypes and improving subject knowledge
Session 3 explores how we teach geography, and how we establish and evidence our impact (live via Zoom)
- Is there a ‘Greater Depth’ in geography, and how might we teach it?
- Assessment approaches that don’t divert focus and energy from the real substance of learning
- Being cross-curricular while maintaining high standards in geography
Everywhere’s been where it is ever since it was first put there. It’s called geography
