Aims

KEY OBJECTIVES:

• To develop the skills of staff to support learners with speech and language difficultie

Provide some theoretical knowledge and share an abundance of practical skills and ideas in the following areas:

Week 1:
What is communication
Improving listening, attention and independent learning skills
Week 2:
Listening, memory and understanding spoken language
Modifying adults’ speech to help a child understand language
Week 3:
Understanding beyond simple sentences
Expressive language development
Week 4:
Promoting effective communication and social skills
Supporting children with unclear speech
Week 5:
Linking speech to reading and writing
Management of stammering and other issues raised during the course

Overview

The course is accredited through the Ascentis and involves 90 hours of study of which 20 hours are spent in formal training sessions. To gain accreditation it is necessary to compile a portfolio. Learners will need to spend at least 50 hours reflecting on course sessions, preparing and implementing activities and compiling their portfolios. Schools will need to set aside time for learners to carry out this work. Sessions are held weekly to make planning for this easier. All course participants will compile an online portfolio at Level 3.
