Prescribing of Adrenaline Auto-injector Pens for School Children

Attention: School Business Managers

Prescribing of  Adrenaline Auto-injector pens for school children

The Resuscitation Council (UK) and the Medical and Health Care Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) specify that:

'People who have been prescribed an adrenaline auto-injector because of the risk of anaphylaxis should carry TWO devices with them at all times for emergency, on-the-spot use. After every use of an adrenaline auto-injector, an ambulance should be called (even if symptoms are improving), the individual should lie down with their legs raised and, if at all possible, should not be left alone.

  • TWO devices are recommended at all times, as some people can require more than one dose of adrenaline and the AAI device may sometimes be incorrectly administered or occasionally misfire.
  • The European Medicines Agency (EMA) also recommends healthcare professionals prescribe 2 auto-injectors per patient which should be carried around with the patient at all times. Children attending primary schools may be prescribed up to 4 pens.
  • Depending on their level of understanding and competence, children and particularly teenagers should carry their AAI(s) on their person at all times alternatively be located nearby where they should be quickly and easily accessible at all times.
  • At after school clubs the child or carer should transfer the pens they use whilst at school with the child to the after school club, this applies to both externally run clubs or school run clubs.
