Safeguarding Briefing - 1st February 2021

Dear Colleague,

Council fined after child sustains fatal injuries at playground

A London council was sentenced this week following an incident in which a five-year old girl died after playground equipment collapsed on top of her at a local park.

The Health and Safety investigation found that the council had failed to ensure that an annual playground safety check was carried out. The play equipment had not been inspected since September 2013.

The girl had been swinging on a rope attached to a wooden post, when the play equipment gave way. The post was made from unsuitable wood which had decayed at the base.

The council were fined £330,000 and ordered to pay costs of £6,204.

The free resources can be adapted for use in school, for home-schooling, online lessons or independent learning and can be found here: https://www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk/

Safer Internet Day - Tuesday 9th February 2021

Safeguarding Extra NEW Edition - The Toxic Trio: Help or Hinderance

The latest edition of Safeguarding Extra is now available. In it Andrew Hall considers the phrase 'Toxic Trio' and its underlining helpfulness in understanding child abuse. Intended to describe the risk factors for child protection has the 'Toxic Trio' now outlived its usefulness? What is the research behind the phrase and does it live up to scrutiny?

Safeguarding Extra members can access the edition here: https://safeguardingextra.info/safeguarding-extra-episode-14/

Each episode of Safeguarding Extra aims to look deeper into one safeguarding topic or case study. It is an ideal complement to your existing CPD programme and is especially useful for DSLs. Each episode can be shared with others in the same school and has a certificate of attendance to demonstrate the additional CPD time.

Femicide: Every Three Days A Man Kills A Woman (Russell Webster)

In November 2020, the Femicide Census published its fifth, and most comprehensive, report of women killed by men in the UK. The Femicide Census is unique in the UK in that it covers all women killed by men and not only domestic homicide. It finds the number of women killed every year by men has stayed consistent at between 124 and 168 women killed each year.

In at least 59% of femicides committed by intimate partners or male relatives, there was a history of prior abuse by the perpetrator against the victim. In 67% of cases of intimate partner violence, the victim had told someone about the abuse she was experiencing and in 55% of cases, the violence and brutality used in the killing amounted to "overkilling".

A commentary about the Femicide report can be found here: https://www.russellwebster.com/femicide-every-three-days-a-man-kills-a-woman/
