Safeguarding Briefing - 10th May 2021

Adverse Childhood Experiences: a huge impact on development (St John Ambulance)

St Ambulance produces safeguarding updates for their volunteers. The latest update looks at Adverse Childhood Experiences.

The experiences we have early in our lives and particularly in our early childhoods have a huge impact on how we grow and develop, our physical and mental health and our thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

Two important factors that influence this are the quality of our early relational attachments and the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Growing up while experiencing ACEs such as abuse, neglect, community violence, homelessness or being in a household where adults are experiencing mental health issues or harmful alcohol or drug use, can have a long-lasting effect on people’s lives.

'Hidden Men'

Men play a very important role in children’s lives and have a great influence on the children they care for. Despite this, they can be ignored by professionals who sometimes focus almost exclusively on the quality of care children receive from their mothers and female carers.

From an NSPCC analysis of serious case reviews, two categories of ‘hidden’ men emerged:

  • men who pose a risk to the child which resulted in them suffering;
  • men who are capable of protecting and nurturing the child, for example estranged fathers, but were overlooked by professionals.

This briefing is based on case reviews published since 2008 which highlighted the issue of professionals not identifying and/or assessing key men, such as fathers and mothers’ partners, involved in the care of children who died or suffered harm.

Safeguarding supervision - a new resource from Supervision in School

Julia Davey, from 'Supervision in School' writes: 'Effective supervision is needed now more than ever as DSL workload increases and schools return to normal.

At Supervision in School, we recognised that this was a need we could meet by offering a reflective supervision programme that takes a systemic approach, acknowledges current legislation and recognised standards for supervision.

Our engaging, facilitated sessions use high-quality, pre-recorded videos to take you through a step-by-step reflective process exploring six critical areas: attendance; mental health; contextual safeguarding/ peer on peer abuse; partnerships; domestic abuse; and record keeping. Sessions explore your strategic approach alongside individual cases.

To ensure a strengthened whole school system, the programme includes DSL wellbeing, mentoring and skills for safeguarding for all staff.

NEW Resources from London Grid for Learning (LGfL)

Mark Bentley, Safeguarding & Cybersecurity Manager at the London Grid for Learning (LGfL) has added new resources to their website. One looks at the recent Ofsted changes and includes a video of a headteacher giving feedback from his recent Ofsted inspection. The other new resource is a really useful link to share with parents, as it draws together information sources to help them keep their children safe online.

STOP SO - A charity for sexual abuse prevention

There are practically no NHS services available for people who have, or might, commit sexual offences. Access to professional support and help is limited and most therapists don’t want to work with these clients.

StopSO believe that prevention is better than cure, so they provide specialist therapy across the UK to sex offenders and those who have yet to act on their ‘troubling thoughts’. StopSO works with families too, helping them come to terms with being related to a sex offender.

StopSO acts as the first point of contact for clients who ask for help. A client worried about sexual thoughts or who has
committed a sexual offence contacts StopSO by email to be matched with a trained therapist working in this field.

Fabricated Illness - Safeguarding Extra

In February 2021 the Royal College of Paediatricians and Child Health (RCPCH) updated its guidance on Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII). Importantly the guidance introduces a new definition which now also includes the term ‘Perplexing Presentations'.

Fabricated or Induced Illness is to be used when parents are deliberately causing harm to their child by deceiving doctors. Perplexing Presentations cover cases where the child's symptoms can not be attributed to a medical conditions, and the child is not being harmed.

In the latest edition of safeguarding Extra, specialist safeguarding consultant, Andrew Hall, looks at the new guidance and its likely impact on schools.
