Safeguarding Briefing - 5th September 2022

Dear ,

Welcome back!

It's September already! Season of mellow fruitfulness, shiny shoes and an updated KCSIE. I hope you have had a pleasant break and, if you've travelled, a safe journey home.

Several documents have been updated over the summer. You can download them in one zip file here: https://safeguarding.link/guidance2022

Keeping Children Safe in Education September 2022 (DfE)

The latest version of Keeping Children Safe in Education was published at the end of last week, and is pretty much the same as the 'for information' version posted in May 2022. The few changes have been grammatical errors or for clarity. Note that a new paragraph was inserted at paragraph 94, so all paragraphs after that have been re-numbered. (If you've already referred to any paragraph numbers in referring to KCSIE, this means that you need to add 1 to all paragraphs after 94, for example, paragraph 158 becomes 159)

Other documents have also been updated and are important reading:

Searching, screening and confiscation at school (DfE)

This guidance has been updated to take into account police searches undertaken under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) Code C.

You can find an explanation of the changes and further information about police searches in schools, including a video and slides, in Safeguarding.Pro here: http://safeguarding.link/searching

Behaviour in schools (DfE)

This document has been updated to give guidance on some specific behaviour issues:

  • Child-on-child sexual violence and sexual harassment
  • Behaviour incidents online
  • Suspected criminal behaviour

Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018 (HM Government)

Although updated a couple of times now, Working Together still has '2018' on the front cover. (I don't know why, I think it's just because wording has been updated.)

This is a factual update to Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018 to reflect recent changes to legislation, including references to:

  • Integrated Care Boards replaced Clinical Commissioning Groups
  • Public Health England replaced by the UK Health Security Agency and the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID)
  • Domestic Abuse Act 2021
  • UK GDPR is the retained EU law version of the GDPR. The UK GDPR sits alongside the Data Protection Act 2018

Inspecting safeguarding in early years, education and skills settings (Ofsted)

Ofsted say that this document has been updated to reflect the recent changes to the DfE guidance 'Keeping children safe in education' specifically with regard to:

  • preventing and responding to reports of sexual violence and harassment between children
  • evidencing  whether governing bodies and proprietors do all they reasonably can to limit children’s exposure to risks through the setting’s IT system; and
  • clarifying that references to “staff” includes supply teachers, volunteers, tutors and contractors.

Note that to aid in its accessibility, this Ofsted document is only available as a webpage.

Pupil Wellbeing Survey (LGfL)

The London Grid for Learning have created a wellbeing survey for getting to know pupils in a new class. This survey will help find out the good and bad of the holidays, and the child's hopes and fears for the new school year. It could also be an opportunity to pick up on any concerns that might have arisen over the summer.

Safeguarding Handbook

The new edition of the Safeguarding Handbook will be finalised this week. I wait until the final version of KCSIE has been published so that I can make sure that everything is correct. Once that's done, I can send it to the printers. The Safeguarding Handbook should then be available sometime during the week after that.

Dreamachine project

The Dreamachine project is touring the UK this year as part of the Unboxed: Creativity in the UK programme. Key to the programme is teacher and pupil wellbeing.

The programme has been developed by A New Direction in partnership with the British Science Association, UNICEF UK and We The Curious. The resources include a range of free resources which explore the extraordinary power of our minds. The materials have been created with the Chartered College of Teaching and Education Support to support teacher wellbeing.

Advanced Safeguarding for DSLs

This is a four-session course for DSLs over a full-day. The course is offered live and as a recorded replay. When the course is live, there are plenty of opportunities to contribute with observations, questions or answers. As a recording, the interactions from other people are included and feedback notes that this makes it feel like you are not on your own.

"I came to a session in Birmingham back in 2019 (the day after the GE I think) and it was superb. Today [online] was just as good, if not better. The use of video mixed with live speaking was excellent and goes way beyond what other safeguarding courses provide. You've been there and done it, and your openness with your own story is inspirational."

Whole School Safeguarding CPD Online Session for September 2022

In this two and half hour online presentation aimed at staff in all roles, specialist safeguarding consultant, Andrew Hall, explores important aspects of safeguarding in schools including child protection, learning from case studies and the latest version of Keeping Children Safe in Education.

"In my excitement, I forgot to add our star rating to the Safeguarding training we have just watched. If we could, we would give it 10 stars! That was the best Safeguarding training we have ever had, thank you so much. Feedback from staff has, so far, been overwhelmingly positive…I can't thank you enough."

"I would like to extend my thanks to Andrew for his fantastic online training. It was filmed so well - almost as if he were here with us! We were kept engaged throughout and felt so well informed - a huge thank you. It was a real success, and we look forward to booking you again in the future - with the staff team saying it was the best safeguarding training they have ever had. We really appreciated Andrew's real-life storytelling and the way such sensitive information was shared - it was excellent training."
