Keeping Children Safe in Education - Update for 2023
Quite a few people have written to ask about the latest update to Keeping Children Safe in Education as there hadn't been a consultation document this year. The Department for Education told me that 'KCSIE has been subject to regular review and public consultation in recent years leading to substantial changes. We would like schools and colleges to have time to embed the current guidance. Where necessary, we intend to make simple changes only to the 2023 version, and it will not therefore be subject to public consultation'.
Understanding New Filtering and Monitoring Standards for School - SWGfL
Ensuring your school's cybersecurity, and online child protection protocols is vital for keeping children and young people, out of harms way. With computing now an integral part of what schools do, from the administrative level down to simple IT lessons it has never been more important to understand the sphere. The Department of Education has recently released the new filtering and monitoring standards, that schools are expected to abide by. The document itself is in Governmentese, so to help in deciphering it and putting it into practice, the SWGfL has created page designed to help you understand its most important parts. New British Schools Overseas Standards Guidance
The UK education sector does not only cover institutions within the national territory. There are a total of fifty four British run schools across almost every continent. Although being outside of the national territory of the United Kingdom, by dint of their establishment they must conform to the standards set by the UK government's department of education. Next month the UK Government is set to put into force their new set of standards, to take over from the previous set of standards published back in September 2017. The Rationale Behind Replacing 'Stranger Danger' Doctrine - Whitehatter
'Stranger Danger' is a phrase that almost everyone in the UK has heard at least once. Either whilst they were in education, or in one's capacity as a parent. The words rhyme, they are easy to remember and meet an intuitive criteria which makes its implementation easy. An important qualifier for giving advice to young children. Given its prior effectiveness, it is important to raise the question as to why it was changed. Why do we no longer teach this doctrine as the primary defence against child abuse? Over at the Whitehatter they've written an article explaining why it was no longer relevant, and exploring the rise of better methodologies for protecting children. Advanced Safeguarding for DSLs
This is a four-session course for DSLs over a full-day. The course is offered live and as a recorded replay. When the course is live, there are plenty of opportunities to contribute with observations, questions or answers. As a recording, the interactions from other people are included and feedback notes that this makes it feel like you are not on your own.
"I came to a session in Birmingham back in 2019 (the day after the GE I think) and it was superb. Today [online] was just as good, if not better. The use of video mixed with live speaking was excellent and goes way beyond what other safeguarding courses provide. You've been there and done it, and your openness with your own story is inspirational."
LIVE ON LOCATION remember that you can book Andrew to visit your school, cluster or MAT to share his DSL course. Please contact us for details and bookings.
