Data Protection for Schools - Service Update

For all Schools

As many of you may know Rezaur Choudhury, Data Protection Officer will be leaving us later in July, and I am sure many of you will wish to extend best wishes to him which we would welcome you to do so via our group leaving card through this link.

As Rezaur moves on, I am pleased to introduce to you to our Interim Data Protection Officer, Sharlene Morris. Sharlene has a wealth of experience in data protection, has held DPO roles, most recently at the RAF Benevolent Fund and has past work experience in information security, information governance and data protection at the London Boroughs of Croydon and Lambeth for both the authorities and schools. Further changes are that the Data Protection function and the risk function for the Council has recently moved, with reporting lines from the Audit Service transferring to Legal Services, meaning that this function is now part of the Legal Practice and Compliance Team. This decision was taken with a view to strengthen the available clerical support to both functions and provide resilience.

Going forward we are looking to improve the DPO for schools’ service. We are recruiting a Data Protection Paralegal, who we look forward to welcoming in the near future. This paralegal will act as a key first point of contact for handling school data protection queries. Please continue to use the email inbox schools.data.protection.officer@enfield.gov.uk  so we can process your query as efficiently as possible. We are putting together a training programme to be published in the Autumn Term 2024 which will focus on data protection and associated topics from a school perspective. Our first update of process is the production of a new data breach reporting form which is part of improving the robustness of the data breach process, as the questions contained will assist you in the reporting, detailing mitigating actions and identifying prevention strategies. This is a topic that will be included in our training programme.

Please find the new Data Breach form attached on the right hand side.

I hope you will view the above change positively and be assured that myself, Sharlene and the wider compliance team look forward to providing continued support you.

Andrea Kilby

Interim Legal Practice Manager
