Priority message from Department for Education (DfE) - Information for schools, further education settings and local authorities: New vocational GCSEs – what you need to know
On 24 September 2026, we announced plans to transform vocational education for students aged 14 to 16 years through the introduction of new vocational GCSEs.
The new qualifications will give students more opportunities to study practical and technical subjects alongside existing GCSEs. Over time, they will replace Technical Awards and provide clearer pathways to A levels, T Levels, apprenticeships, higher education and skilled employment.
Some subjects could be available from September 2029. Look out for a consultation before the end of 2026 and contribute your views.
