Safeguarding Briefing - 10th February 2020

From Andrew Hall

 DBS Certificates uploaded online

For reasons that I won't bore you with, I was searching online for an image of a DBS certificate last week. I was speechless (I know I couldn't believe it either) to find probably hundreds of DBS certificates which were not redacted in anyway. Many of the images give sufficient detail for identity theft.

Please don't. Just don't.

Some of the scanned copies were there to show people what they look like and had details obscured. However, in numerous other cases, tutors, for example, had obviously uploaded them to their website, so that parents could easily check the certificate for peace-of-mind.

NCA Threat Report

Last week I inadvertently directed you to an old NCA threat report, rather than the most up-to-date version. Sorry about that.

Education Made (Jordan Kenison)

Need to find a good speaker or organisation to bring an external perspective into your school. Education Made could be just the thing to help you.

Education Made has been founded by teachers who have specialised and lead in PSHE, RSE, Citizenship, Careers & Guidance and Financial & Character Education. Why do we exist? We are passionate about the personal development of young people but fed up with wasting time trying to find suitable organisations and speakers to support our curriculums or drop-down days. Our platform significantly reduces the time, effort and cost associated with finding organisations to support your curriculum, assembly slot or drop-down day. The instant benefits:

All workshops, speakers and student experiences on the page are recommendations of teachers (your peers) who use the platform. There is an easy-to-use search engine tool. Search by subject, keyword, key stage, location or cost and other key criteria. You can ensure students have the best learning experience. Many workshops are free or low cost to meet every budget.

Sign up for a free teacher membership and be kept up to date with organisations looking to connect with schools. If you would like to recommend an inspiring organisation, please do not hesitate to contact me jordan@educationmade.co.uk

We are also hosting a free event on Saturday 29th February 2020 to help teachers support student wellbeing called 'Winning through Wellbeing - an alternative approach to student success.

You can book your free ticket here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/84450552877

Topics on the day being discussed mental health, behaviour for learning, gang prevention workshops, employability and gambling and online gaming.

Podcasts

I'm a big fan of podcasts, I listen to the them often when I'm travelling. Like everything, I have my favourites, but occasionally people tip off about ones they've enjoyed too.

This week, Aidan told me about a podcast I hadn't heard before called 'Your Undivided Attention'. There are a few episodes here that will help you understand the wider aspects of safeguarding issues.

Rock the voter (Episode 10) hears from Brittany Kaiser, a former Cambridge Analytica insider, who witnessed a two day presentation at the company that shocked her. The episode discusses how internet companies hook people in and how Facebook can build up detailed information so that they can tailor individualised ads.

The Cure for Hate (Episode 11) Tony McAleer says, '"You can binge watch an ideology in a weekend." He should know. A former white supremacist, McAleer was introduced to neo-Nazi ideology through the U.K. punk scene in the 1980s. But after his daughter was born, he embarked on a decades-long journey from hate to compassion.

You can find the podcast on your usual podcatcher or here: https://your-undivided-attention.simplecast.com/

PS For my guilty pleasure, I love the Fortunately podcast from the BBC! Laugh out loud funny.

Facebook Off-Platform Data

Do you know how much data Facebook has collected whilst you are NOT using their platform?

Facebook have just launched a new tool that can tell you which companies are supplying Facebook with information about your real-world activity — for example, that you visited their website or purchased a product from it.

A lot of times when you think Facebook is listening to your phone conversations based on how specific its ads are, it’s actually because of how extensive (and hidden) its offsite data collection is.

'Off-Facebook Activity' Tool

If you are using the device you access Facebook on right now, the tool can be found by going to: https://www.facebook.com/off_facebook_activity/

If not, open Facebook, go to Settings and click on Your Facebook Information. You should see a line for Off-Facebook Activity, and then just go to view.

The feature also allows you to opt out of some of this collection — to a point. Prepared to be shocked.

VPN - What's that then and why's it important

A virtual private network (VPN) gives you online privacy and anonymity by creating a private network from a public internet connection. For example, this means you can bank securely. VPNs are not difficult to install and use, and there are many apps that can offer this service. Like many things, VPNs can be used for a good...and for bad.

I had an email this week from a primary DSL: 'It has come to light that children are circumnavigating their parental controls via VPN's. There are VPN apps that can be downloaded that allow children to have a virtual private network. This allows them to access adult sites and due to the fact that the VPN can make it look like you are in another time zone they can be accessed at anytime of the day. We have had quite a few children accessing a site called Porn Hub this way. When children have been questioned as to how they found out about VPN's they have said it's either by word of mouth from their peers or it has popped up whilst watching YouTube.'

#Goldilocks: A fairytale for the digital age Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross

#Goldilocks is a modern twist on the classic fairy tale that offers a fun and accessible way for you to discuss all things social media related with your younger children. Co-branded by Vodafone UK and Andersen Press, award-winning author Jeanne Willis created the light-hearted story alongside illustrator Tony Ross. The book is designed to help educate children about the potential consequences of being unkind, getting carried away with selfies, or oversharing images, as we see Goldilocks getting into trouble with the three bears over her pursuit of likes on social media….
