New model music curriculum

FAO:All

The DfE has today published a new model music curriculum. This is non-statutory guidance for schools for Key Stages 1 to 3, developed by a panel of 15 music education specialists.

The purpose of the guidance is to support schools to provide high-quality music education to their pupils. It supplements the existing National Curriculum programme of study. As non-statutory guidance, it is intended as good practice advice and no school will be compelled to implement the approaches set out.

Alongside this, the government has also announced a commitment of £79 million in the 2021/22 financial year for music education hubs, which provide pupils with instruments to play in class, and £1 million for charities which teach pupils about different styles of music (the hubs themselves were notified earlier this month).
