Safeguarding Briefing - 4th October 2021

Dear Colleague,

Child and Adolescent to Parent Violence and Abuse (C/APVA)

Recently I was asked about child and adolescent to parent violence. I think this is an under-discussed topic, so I started to look for some suitable resources and information that would help with understanding the issue, and what schools could do.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, researchers at the Universities of Oxford and Manchester found that the lockdown in 2020 led to an increased incidents of child and adolescent violence towards parents.

Helpful resources

Information guide: adolescent to parent violence and abuse (APVA)(Home Office)

Adolescent to parent violence and abuse (ESSS)

Information guide: adolescent to parent violence and abuse (BASW)

Child to Parent Violence and Abuse (North and South of Tyne Safeguarding Children Partnership)

Study finds ‘significant increase’ in child-to-parent violence in lockdown (University of Oxford)

Experiences of Child and Adolescent to Parent Violence in the Covid-19 Pandemic (University of Oxford)

C/APVA: Seven minute Briefing (Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool and Lancashire Children’s Safeguarding Assurance Partnership and Adult Safeguarding Boards)

Any ideas for this question?

A reader asks, 'I am trying to find an assembly introducing the different forms of abuse and harmful behaviours for secondary pupils - have looked in so many places - any ideas please ? I want an introduction which will help them understand and encourage young people to speak out etc.'

If you have any links or ideas let me know by replying to this email.

How do you find out about external organisations in overseas countries if you are an international school?

Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment (Flowchart)

I've created a flowchart to help schools plan for incidents of Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment. The actions are taken from the government's guidance document, Sexual Violence and Sexual Harassment, and Keeping Children safe in Education (2021).

The flowchart is an extract from the Safeguarding Handbook and can be downloaded here: https://6282.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/Safeguarding+Handbook+September+2021+v.12.0+SVSH+Flowchart.pdf

You can purchase a copy of the Safeguarding Handbook here: https://www.safeguardinginschools.co.uk/store

There are three version of the handbook:

  • Basic - just the book
  • Enhanced - the book, and a download full of resources
  • Enhanced Plus - the book, the downloads and a pdf version of the Handbook that you can put on a tablet or iPad, or even print multiple copies for use within the purchasing school.

Online safety: Editable parent newsletters (Think U Know)

It is so important that we keep supporting parents and carers to keep their children safe online. Although the messages may seem old hat to us, as their children get older there are new challenges for parents.

The Think U Know website has editable newsletters for parents and carers for both primary and secondary schools which will help you create relevant content.

Adverse Childhood Experiences

The Little Book of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ImaginationLancaster, Lancaster University)

I discovered a really useful guide to ACEs this week. Published in 2018 by frontline practitioners based in the North West of England the book aims to inform other practitioners about what ACEs are, what their immediate effects are and how they can affect children both in the short-term and throughout their lives.
