Safeguarding Briefing - 7th November 2022

Dear Colleague

Working definition of trauma-informed practice (DfE)

This week the DfE published a 'Working definition of trauma-informed practice'.

Trauma-informed approaches have become increasingly cited in policy and adopted in practice, however, there has been a lack of consensus on how trauma-informed practice is defined, what its key principles are and how it can be built into services and systems.

The DfE hopes that they can address this gap by providing a working definition of trauma-informed practice for practitioners.

Trauma-informed practice is an approach to health and care interventions which is grounded in the understanding that trauma exposure can impact an individual’s neurological, biological, psychological and social development. The guidance covers the six principles of trauma-informed practice: safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment and cultural consideration.

Coerced online child sexual abuse - Help for parents (UK Safer Internet Centre)

The UKSIC report that more than a quarter of girls who took part in their survey have had some kind of experience of receiving a request for nude or semi-nude photos or videos.

Children can be groomed, coerced or encouraged into sexual activities online. Any child with unsupervised access to the internet is potentially at risk.

To help parents understand this difficult topic and talk to their children, the UKSIC has produced a checklist and resources about online sexual abuse.

Sharing data to safeguard children (ICO)

The Information Commissioner's Office recently published a webinar recorded at the Data Protection Practitioners' Conference 2022. The seminar outlined their current work with the Children’s Commissioner in this sphere, including their plans to develop a practical resource to help practitioners.

The ICO's data sharing code and supporting resources aim help to help safeguarding professionals share data appropriately. They are producing a sector-specific resource with support from the Children’s Commissioners Office.

Find the 40-minute webinar here: https://youtu.be/SgeIY5AuYgU

A set of twelve written FAQs that follow the session can be found at the link below, including:

  • Where can I find guidance and tools to support my role?
  • How long should we keep data?
  • What lawful basis should I use?
  • Do I need to obtain consent to share a child’s personal data?
  • Do I need to tell a child that I am sharing their personal data?
  • How can we ensure the secure transfer of data between two organisations?

DfE warned after gambling companies benefit from learning records database (ICO)

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued a reprimand to the Department for Education (DfE) following the prolonged misuse of the personal information of up to 28 million children.

An ICO investigation found that the DfE’s poor due diligence meant a database of pupils’ learning records was ultimately used by Trust Systems Software UK Ltd (trading as Trustopia), an employment screening firm, to check whether people opening online gambling accounts were 18.

Advanced Safeguarding for DSLs

This is a four-session course for DSLs over a full-day. The course is offered live and as a recorded replay. When the course is live, there are plenty of opportunities to contribute with observations, questions or answers. As a recording, the interactions from other people are included and feedback notes that this makes it feel like you are not on your own.

"I came to a session in Birmingham back in 2019 (the day after the GE I think) and it was superb. Today [online] was just as good, if not better. The use of video mixed with live speaking was excellent and goes way beyond what other safeguarding courses provide. You've been there and done it, and your openness with your own story is inspirational."
