Safeguarding Briefing - 24th April 2023

Dear Colleagues,

Congratulations to the happy couple!

Many of you will have had contact with Chiara who works in our office. I'm delighted to tell you that last weekend Chiara married my son Matthew (left below). They are currently on honeymoon in Texas, USA. You will notice that her name has changed in her email signature to Chaira Hall-Levoni.

We had a really lovely day and the Safeguarding In Schools team were out in force. You can see Emma and I (below right); Hollie was there too, but I haven't been able to find a picture!

National Guidance Revisions - Outdoor Education Advisors Panel

The Outdoor Educational Advisors Panel has made revisions to its national guidance on outdoor education. The OEAP is the lead body for guidance, advice and training related to outdoor learning. An important part of educating children about the world around them, in an interactive manner. Its revisions have seen the publication of a Welsh translation of their national guidance document, across the board rewrites to facilitate easier comprehension and numerical corrections throughout. It’s an essential document for any school wishing to embark on outdoors learning. You can find the amended national guidance document, and a list of amendments by following the links below:

Planning School Trips - Educational Authority

In the UK we are now finally coming out of a long autumn-winter period. With the onset of Spring, it’ll soon be the prime season for school trips and outings. As the weather warms up, the temptation to take your classes to educational sites across the country will emerge. But safeguarding and risk prevention does not stop at the school gates. In fact, the safeguarding needs of children and young people are even greater outside of school premises. Yet there are specific safeguarding requirements whilst undertaking these outer-school exercises. Over at Educational Authority, they have published a series of downloadable documents to help you plan and risk manage your school trips. If you’re interested in taking a look please follow the link below:

Introducing Sign in Central Record - Sign in Central Record

This week I’d like to introduce a new piece of software – Sign in Central Record. This product is aimed at helping schools to stay up-to-day with statutory guidance in relation to SCRs. Sign in Central Record was designed by school staff for school staff. The company’s objective is to maximize efficiency when dealing with SCRs, by cutting the time required to deal with them. It does this by allowing previously manual tasks to be done automatically. This automation saves your teaching staff hours of work, whilst allowing you to stay fully compliant and up to date with safeguarding guidance. The software in question, now comes in app form and is being used by over 1,350 schools across the UK. If you’re interested in finding out more, follow the link below:

Capture Video - Financial Times

In a recently published video by financial times films, gives an important insight to the impact of social media on our children and our family life. The video is well worth a watch and in particular encouraging parents to watch. I've used this video with parents groups, and they were shocked. The video led them to reconsider how they talk to their children about, their social media use. You can find the video on YouTube by following the link below:

Advanced Safeguarding for DSLs

This is a four-session course for DSLs over a full-day. The course is offered live and as a recorded replay. When the course is live, there are plenty of opportunities to contribute with observations, questions or answers. As a recording, the interactions from other people are included and feedback notes that this makes it feel like you are not on your own.

"I came to a session in Birmingham back in 2019 (the day after the GE I think) and it was superb. Today [online] was just as good, if not better. The use of video mixed with live speaking was excellent and goes way beyond what other safeguarding courses provide. You've been there and done it, and your openness with your own story is inspirational."

LIVE ON LOCATION remember that you can book Andrew to visit your school, cluster or MAT to share his DSL course. Please contact us for details and bookings.

In this two and half hour online presentation aimed at staff in all roles, specialist safeguarding consultant, Andrew Hall, explores important aspects of safeguarding in schools including child protection, learning from case studies and the latest version of Keeping Children Safe in Education.

"In my excitement, I forgot to add our star rating to the Safeguarding training we have just watched. If we could, we would give it 10 stars! That was the best Safeguarding training we have ever had, thank you so much. Feedback from staff has, so far, been overwhelmingly positive…I can't thank you enough."

"I would like to extend my thanks to Andrew for his fantastic online training. It was filmed so well - almost as if he were here with us! We were kept engaged throughout and felt so well informed - a huge thank you. It was a real success, and we look forward to booking you again in the future - with the staff team saying it was the best safeguarding training they have ever had.
