Hanni and the Magic Window - ChildNet
Helping young children in difficult situations to seek support has always been hard. Their minds are often not developed enough to understand bad situations. They are also unable to comprehend what they need to do to get out of them. More often than not their limited vocabulary will also reduce their ability to talk to adults effectively. ChildNet has released a downloadable story over on their site, aimed at children aged three and up. Their objective is to make them aware of how to seek help. By following the link below you can also find simplified resources around the story, as well as the story itself.

Safeguarding Practice Review: Child Q
IA recently published safeguarding practice review looked into the death of a 15-year boy, referred to as ‘Paul’ in the report. His mother and her partner were later jailed for life in prison after the jury found them guilty of torturing him to death.
In August 2021 paramedics attended a property in response to a report that a 15-year-old male was in cardiac arrest. He died 30 mins later, despite treatment from the ambulance crew.
Later, the Forensic Pathologist said that there were a significant number of fractures at various stages of healing, indicating several non-accidental injuries on different days, it was their opinion that Paul’s injuries were a result of numerous non-accidental injuries.
Paul had arrived in the UK from Poland in October 2020, but his mother and her partner had lived in north Yorkshire for a decade.
One of the interesting aspects of the safeguarding practice review referred to the local authority’s international New Arrivals Team. The report said that ‘Paul' was not known to this team and a referral had not been made because his mother and her partner had lived in the UK for around 10 years.
Does your local authority have a international new arrivals team?
If they do, how is this service accessed? Can new-in children be referred even if their parent(s) have lived in the UK for some years before that?
The safeguarding practice review (which refers to this 15 year old as Child Q) can be found below on the Kirklees Safeguarding Children Partnership here:

Vaping Concerns - Welsh Senedd
As educational professionals, particularly in the secondary school sector, you will have likely caught your older pupils smoking. It is an occurrence that has been part of teaching older pupils since time immemorial. The issues related to smoking in general, particularly on those without fully developed bodies, have been well documented. An increased vulnerability to heart-disease, cancer, dental issues etc, is an almost universally understood effect. Yet vaping is becoming a far more prevalent way for teenagers to exercise their desire to experiment with dangerous substances. Vaping devices are brightly coloured, come in multiple flavours from bubblegum to strawberry, and are packaged in a 'cool' way. All aspects highly attractive to younger age groups. There is a misconception that vaping is less dangerous, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Last year the Welsh Senedd published a report on the effects of vaping in children and teens. To read the their report please follow the link below:

Vape Detectors - SchoolWatch
For thirty years, the security systems company SchoolWatch has been keeping schools and pupils safe while on site. During this year's BETT show at London's ExCeL centre, they unveiled their new series of vape detectors for schools. But the capabilities of these detectors do not stop at vaping prevention. They are also capable of detecting cigarette smoke, marijuana smoke and air quality disruptions. Their system will then alert relevant members of staff through their phones, allowing them to respond to potential banned substance events at any time. As a recording, the interactions from other people are included and feedback notes that this makes it feel like you are not on your own.
"I came to a session in Birmingham back in 2019 (the day after the GE I think) and it was superb. Today [online] was just as good, if not better. The use of video mixed with live speaking was excellent and goes way beyond what other safeguarding courses provide. You've been there and done it, and your openness with your own story is inspirational."
LIVE ON LOCATION remember that you can book Andrew to visit your school, cluster or MAT to share his DSL course. Please contact us for details and bookings.
