Improving School Food Standards in England – Response to Consultation Published
For all Schools
Please see below a recent communication received on 17 September from the Department for Education (DfE) regarding updates to the School Food Standards in England.
The consultation, developed by DfE in collaboration with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID), sought views on proposals for:
- new breakfast standards
- increasing fibre, reducing sugar and foods high in saturated fat, sugar and salt (HFSS)
- changing protein requirements
- improving access to drinking water and healthier drinks
- implementation, compliance and wider practical considerations for schools and catering providers
This week, DfE published the response to consultation which sets out the government’s decisions to update the School Food Standards in England, including new breakfast standards. Subject to Parliamentary approval, these requirements will apply from September 2027, except where specific secondary school requirements are phased to September 2028. The breakfast standards will apply to all before-school childcare provided on school sites. The School Food Standards also apply to food served at after-school clubs provided on school premises up to 6pm.
The government will publish guidance explaining how the breakfast standards interact with wider school food provision, and how the standards apply in primary schools, secondary schools, schools with external caterers, schools with multiple providers, and schools offering breakfast, breaktime, and after-school provision.
