NEW EAL Data QA & Funding page in Perspective Lite
For Headteachers in all Schools
The NEW EAL Data QA & Funding page became available in Perspective Lite on Thursday 17th September providing schools with a helpful new tool to identify potential missed EAL funding opportunities ahead of the October 2026 School Census. Please see the attached factsheet for further information and guidance.
Time sensitive: The EAL Data QA & Funding page provides an opportunity for schools to investigate highlighted pupils, validate the information and, where appropriate, update the Language fields in their MIS ahead of the October (Autumn) School Census, helping to ensure potential EAL funding opportunities are not missed.
Pupils recorded in the October School Census as having a first language other than English may attract EAL funding for three years after entering the statutory school system in England, so it is important that schools allow sufficient time to review the page, investigate any highlighted pupils and make any necessary updates before the October School Census is submitted.

- Highlights potential missed EAL funding opportunities, helping schools identify pupils whose Language information may need to be reviewed and updated in their MIS.
- Surfaces pupils requiring investigation, making it quicker for schools to identify potential discrepancies and complete their checks.
- Supports improved accuracy of EAL data in the MIS and School Census returns.
What schools need to do before the October School Census:
- Allow sufficient time to review the EAL Data QA & Funding page before submitting the October School Census.
- Review the pupils highlighted on the EAL Data QA & Funding page, particularly those identified as potential funding opportunities.
- Validate the information against existing pupil records and census history and, where appropriate, confirm the pupil's first language with the parent/carer or pupil.
- Where the information held in the MIS needs to be updated, make the necessary changes before the October Census is submitted.
- Only make changes where the school is satisfied that the updated information accurately reflects the pupil's circumstances.
Please note: The information provided by the EAL Data QA & Funding page in Nexus and Perspective Lite is indicative only and should be used to support investigation. Schools should validate all suggested discrepancies against their own records before making any changes within their MIS. Where appropriate, schools should confirm information with the parent/carer/pupil. Further ‘Guidance’ will be available within the EAL Data QA & Funding page.
